Makeup tips: How to apply mascara without smears

Posted on: October 8, 2011

Mascara is a great way so create definition for your eyes and with the variety of colours now on the market, is also a great way to add a funky twist to your make-up look. However, common problems that people face are clumps of mascara that deposit on the lashes, smears on your eyelid and 'spidery' lashes. As a make-up artist, I have learnt quite a few tricks over the years on how to apply mascara so that it is smooth and is separates lashes rather than clumping them together, and more importantly, how to correct mascara gone wrong.

1. Using the right type of mascara Choosing the right mascara for you is often more a case of choosing the right wand for you, more than the mascara itself. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to know which wand suits your eyelashes and creates the look that you want, so it is often a case of trial and error. I suggest that when you find one that you like, keep it - so even if you end up using a different mascara, use the wand that suits you.

2. How to apply Two common mistakes that people make when applying mascara is: a. Applying it in fast brush strokes b. Pumping the wand into the mascara tube too many times and too fast When pumping the mascara wand into the mascara tube, ensure that you do it as infrequently as possible and that you do it slowly. This is because it lets air enter the mascara which causes it to dry out, and in turn, will result in clumps when applied to the lashes. Also, when actually applying, it is good practise to use slow brush strokes so that the lashes are evenly covered with mascara from root to end.

3. Correction techniques The most popular problem with mascara is that some of it often lands on the eyelid. When you try wiping it off it smears, which creates even more work. Everyone, even the professionals, sometimes get mascara on the eyelid, but the trick to removing it without causing any smears, is to wait until the mascara has completely dried. Once it has dried, using a cotton bud, you will be able to remove it and instead of smearing, it will simply crumble off. If after applying the mascara, it seems clumpy, or you can see that your eyelashes have stuck together rather than being separated, it is better to start again.

Applying more mascara over it, only worsens the effect. So, you must completely remove it from the lashes, if possible, wash your eyes with some water, and then start again. Sometimes, using an eyelash curler beforehand helps to ensure that lashes are separated when applying the mascara.

These tips and techniques should improve your application of mascara and help you create the look that you want. You must always be aware of health and safety as well. Here are a few guidelines: - do not share your mascara with anybody else. If you do, buy some disposable wands and ensure that you first put the mascara on the back of your hand, and take it from there, rather than dipping the wand into the mascara tube. - ensure that you dispose of mascara within its expiry date. If you do not know when the expiry date is, dispose of it after 3-5 months of purchase.
